Many thanks to our Editor, Brian Pankuch, for spearheading the transition from a printed to a web-based Newsletter.  This will permit direct on-line access to much information available on the web.  In order to  use the Newsletter and its links effectively we will need to learn how to use the Back and Forward keys of our web browser.

As Chair of the Committee on Computers in Chemical Education (CCCE), I would like to provide information about the Committee and its activities.

I.  ABOUT THE COMMITTEE

The CCCE is a committee of the Division of Chemical Education         (http://DivCHED.chem.wisc.edu/)

The Committee currently has 23 members.

II. MISSION STATEMENT

The CCCE seeks to encourage, publicize and support the development, implementation and assessment of computing technologies in chemical education.

III. COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES

Past activities are described in our annual reports.

Some topics discussed in our 2000 Annual Report (http://www.ched-ccce.org/ccce/reports/report00.html) will be briefly mentioned in this message.

A.   COMPUTERS IN CHEMICAL EDUCATION NEWSLETTER

The timely reporting of the innovative activities of chemical educators is an important part of our mission.  Publication occurs within a few months of submission and does not preclude subsequent publication elsewhere.  Brian Pankuch (pankuch@eclipse.net) is editor of the Newsletter.  Please contact Brian if you wish to submit an article or have suggestions.

    B. SYMPOSIA AND OTHER SESSIONS AT NATIONAL MEETINGS

We regard this as an important activity in support of our mission.  We welcome suggestions and assistance from all chemical educators in achieving this mission.  Contact Harry Pence (pencehe@oneonta.edu) or Catherine H. Middlecamp (chmiddle@facstaff.wisc.edu) if you have suggestions.

      C. CONFCHEM - ON-LINE COMPUTER CONFERENCES

The CCCE has been a leader in promoting on line conferences.  If

you have suggestions, contact Brian Tissue (tissue@vt.edu) or Donald Rosenthal (rosen@clarkson.edu).

      D. ON-LINE INTERCOLLEGIATE COURSES

(http://www.ched-ccce.org/olcc/index.html) Contact James Beard (jbeard@catawba.edu) if you have suggestions.

      E. NATIONAL COMPUTER WORKSHOPS

(http://www.ched-ccce.org/ccce/reports/report00.html) CCCE National Computer Workshops are being planned for the 2002 BCCE at Western Washington University.  (http://atom.chem.wwu.edu/acs/bcce/bcce2002.html) Additional information about these workshops will appear in the Fall 2001 Newsletter.  Contact Charles Abrams (abrams@beloit.edu) if you have suggestions about future workshops.

      F. COMMITTEE MEETINGS

Open and closed meetings of the CCCE will be held at the 2002 BCCE Meeting (http://atom.chem.wwu.edu/acs/bcce/bcce2002.html).  at Western Washington University.

The success of our Committee depends as much on you as it does on the members of our Committee.  You may send any comments and suggestions to me (rosen@clarkson.edu).
