Degrees of Unsaturation

Using the molecular formula, C10H18O, calculate the degrees of unsaturation
  1. # C's * 2 + 2 = 10*2+2 = 22
  2. Subtract # H's = 22 - 18 = 4
  3. Divide by 2 = 4/2 = 2
  4. 2 degrees of unsaturation. This indicates that there could be two double bonds, a tripple bond, a double bond and a ring, or two rings in the structure.
